Item description: * Important Victorian era painted enamel Cherubs or Angels miniature paintings centered into gold, diamond and pearl pendant earrings, the pair being crafted by listed French and Swiss artists Charles Glardon and Leon Cogniet. The pendant drop earrings are 70mm long and 25mm wide at widest points and are crafted in an exceptional wreath garland style and most likely made circa 1850-1860.
Both of these antique earrings are paved with Dutch rose cut diamonds and there is a total of 130 diamonds set throughout this exceptional pair. There are also a total of 34 natural pearls garnished in between each diamond leaf including a pair of two larger pearl drops at each earring’s bottom. The pieces are crafted in 18 karat yellow gold and silver and the size of the central oval cherub miniatures is 22mm x 18mm. The gross weight of the set is about 20 grams. This pair of antique jewelry comes in a large original Victorian red velvet case in the form of a window.
The size of the case is 115mm x 125mm and 51mm deep. Both enamel miniature paintings are signed at back with “C. Glardon d. Cogniet” for Charles Glardon and Leon Cogniet.
Both Charls Glardon and Leon Cogniet are listed Swiss and French artists at all major Art Catalogues and their works are offered at sales by all major auction houses. Absolutely scarce antique master jewelry / jewellery collector set and one of the most intrinsic Victorian era French and Swiss enameled miniature painted earrings and jewels.
Léon Cogniet (August 29, 1794 – November 20, 1880) was a French painter. Cognet was born in Paris In 1812, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under Pierre-Narcisse Guérin at the same time as Delacroix and Géricault. He was a resident at the Villa Medici, in Rome, from 1817 to 1822. A romantic painter, his main subjects were history and portraits, and in 1817 he won the Prix de Rome. He died in Paris in 1880. Among his numerous students were: Louis-Ernest Barrias, Léon Bonnat, Pierre Auguste Cot, Alfred Dedreux, Alfred Dehodencq, Armand Gautier, Jean-Paul Laurens, Jules Joseph Lefebvre, Evariste Vital Luminais, Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta, Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier, Anna Lea Merritt, Charles Louis Lucien Muller, Victor Nehlig, Dominique Louis Papety and Tony Robert-Fleury.
Charles Louis François Glardon-Leubel (1825-1887) was a Swiss enamel miniature painter and probably one of the last great enamel miniature painters of the Geneva school. Charles Glardon was a prolofic painter of miniature portraits and one of the recent Bonhams sales included another great miniature by this artist - Miss Emily Davis, seated with hands clasped, which was described as an exquisite work by one of the last good painters on enamel of the Geneva school. This is indeed one of the best artist signed Victorian enamel jewels and a true collector and museum piece.
